Carnival BACCHANAL!!- Mac Farlane 2017: Cazabon- The Art of Living….

They say Trinidad Carnival is BACCHANAL and that without some type of disagreement or controversy the carnival hasn’t really started. Well all yuh… this one start off on an EXCEPTIONALLY high note with Mac Farlane’s 2017 presentation:  Cazabon – The Art of Living.

When I first saw the collection via social media, I thought “wow this is pretty” but something about it did not resonate well with me. The images left a kinda bad taste, a feeling of uncertainty and I couldn’t say with surety what was unsettling about them. Then I thought, “art is supposed to make you FEEL” and in a culture that has become predominantly bikini mas... I DEFINITELY was feeling a type of way about this one.  Let’s take a moment here to take a small peep at the collection which was launched on 21st October 2016 at Queens Royal College :

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

 Exhibit C

Thoughts?  Feelings?

The thoughts and feeling about this collection have been VERY mixed. So what is the issue... I guess that will depend on your point of view. Here are three views which were posted on social media.

View 1

View 2

 View 3

YEAAAA.... so when we consider:

1. What is the origins of the Carnival? Where and why did it emerge?
2. Is it collection too racially accurate? Is this accuracy a good idea given the current race climate in Trinidad and Tobago?
3. Is the issue that a “white” man has brought this Mas that represents a time in Trinidad and Tobago’s history that some people still feel very deeply in their ancestral DNA?
4. Is the perfectly white of the collection, with hints of brown,  perceived as a slap in the face from the descendants of the colonial ancestors?
5. Is it that people are taking issue with certain sections and not considering the entire presentation?
6. Is it that the emotional intelligence that tends to accompany art, was in this case put aside for the moment?
7. What EXACTLY did Mac Farlane intend with this presentation? What is the context in which this art is supposed to be performed.

Furthermore:

According to the Carnival judging rules:

" Bands are expected to portray costumes of a creative standard suitable for public display and shall not desecrate or ridicule any religion, creed or race. Any Band failing to comply with this rule will result in disqualification from the relevant Competition."

This one have the potential for real Ole Mas!

GIVE DEM BOIS!- SIX Things You Should Know About STICK FIGHTING

It is said that a stick fighter in born and that you cannot teach someone the art form; what you can do is help them remember. The stick fighter it is said, carries the knowledge in her DNA, her soul memory, the fight is retained in her muscles and resides in her spiritual intuition. This may explain why most aren’t drawn to enter the gayelle or  to willingly enter the battleground or to offer the blood sacrifice. Yet, most prefer to bare witness the worship in the brutality.

During my journey into the world of stick fighters I learnt A LOT of things about the art form and about myself. I know most persons in Trinidad and Tobago are not aware of the deep spiritual history and legacy of stick fighting;  nor why it is something important for us to preserve

Camboulay Riots Reenactment- Female Stick Fighter

So, I decided to share 6 things I think the everyday Trinbagoian SHOULD know about stick fighting:

1.       The proper name for the art form of stick fighting is KalindaSome people think that the name Kalinda is a derivative for Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction. In truth there also exists a stick fighing form in Indian called Kali Fighting, which while different does have some fundamental similarities to Kalinda.

Chart: A limited list of Kalinda Techniques

2.       It is believed that Kalinda as an art form entered the Caribbean in the 1720’s.
It is said that Kalinda was a ritual practiced by slaves in the 1700’s. The ritual involved two men who would duel against each other with sticks or “BOIS”. The space in which they fought was called a
gayelle.

Stick Fighters During the 1970's

3.       According to Luis Mc.Williams  Kalinda has 5 Phases:
(i)                  The Challenge
(ii)                The Lavway Call and Response Calls
(iii)               The Karray- Display of physical prowess and dance
(iv)              The Bois- The Attack or the attempt to “buss” the other man head.
(v)                The Pas- The defeated persons is taken for bloodletting at the “blood hole”.

As you can tell this is A LOT of excitement and very interesting to witness. In practice, a stick fighter enters the gayelle as the drummers accompany the lavway call.  During this time the stick fighter dancers her way into the spiritual state of readiness to do battle. Other stick fighter look on, and if one is moved- she enters the gayelle. Both fighters then dance their personal warrior dance, while positioning themselves to attack. Strikes are quick and brutal… some faster than the blink of an eye. The result can be wounding or even death.

4.  In 1884, Kalinda art form was forced underground and into rural communities. In the 1800’s in Trinidad and Tobago the Canboulay Riots, was the people’s response against and oppressive colonialser who sought to restrict their street processions. During this time stick fighters where especially targeted by the authorities because of the damage they could inflict with their bois but also because of the way the spiritually affected the large crowds.

Camboulay Reenactment-  Takes place every Carnival Friday morning at 4am in Piccadilly (Port Of Spain)

5.       Stick Fighting gayelles still exist throughout Trinidad and Tobago, in places such as- Mayaro, Arouca, Manzanilla etc. In recent years, the National Stick Fighting Competitions, a feature of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, is being met with thick crowds especially at the Finals.

6. YOU CAN LEARN STICK FIGHTING TOO!!

NEW BOARD Alert!- CreativeTT

CreativeTT seems to have made a conscious decision to do away with the usual shroud of secrecy, which has surrounded the company since it was formed in 2013. The usual modus operandi has been that the persons who comprised the Board, was generally unknown or known only to a few. CreativeTT favored using the General Managers of the subsidiaries- MusicTT, FilmTT and FashionTT, to be the face and voice of the company. However, a new day has dawned and we have a NEW BOARD!

Let us imagine for a second that a new board means that we will see new ways of doing things, fresh perspectives, pertinent and timely strategies, comprehensive approaches, gap analysis and tax payer dollars well invested.

The question then becomes what do we expect from a company charged "To stimulate and facilitate the business development and export capabilities of Creative Industries in Trinidad and Tobago."... and what do we expect from this NEW BOARD!

Here is my list in no particular order:

1. The adoption of skills sets to effectively make representation at International Trade Negotiations- These country level negotiations deal with a number of key issues related to trade such as Intellectual Property Rights, Taxation Treaties and Market Access.

2. A greater focus on developing Industry Infrastructure- The last board seemed focus on developing the talent pool (skills and business education etc), however INDUSTRY requires that issues such as Data Collection, Intellectual Property Frameworks and Market Development be developed in order to support; the now well skilled and educated talent pool. In simple terms, industry is the sea on which the skilled artiste sails.

3. Business Development Strategies developed from the business science- Business enterprises have several models that can be used to OBJECTIVELY determine what a business strategy should be... it basically spits out the answer for you. I would like to see the inputs that determines whether we should adopt a Market Penetration Strategy vs. a Market Expansion Strategy vs. a Hybrid. The inputs that clearly identify the Forces for Changes vs. the Forces Against Change AND the plan to leverage the forces for and mitigate the forces against. I would like to see some financial forecasting, so that I can see and know CLEARLY when CreativeTT can expect a profit from my tax payer dollars. AND if I can get that by subsidiary... that will be fantastic!

4. Well researched and brilliant strategic decision making in regards to Export Strategies- The decided strategy determines the areas in which CAPABILITY should be developed. Interestingly, I have never heard CreativeTT link capability with capacity... you know the marriage that determines Comparative Advantage and informs Competitive Advantage. I would love to see the board produce a Strategic Global Positioning Plan.

Imagine.... now WAKE UP!

Your responsibility as a stakeholder (your tax payers dollars) is to let YOUR voice be heard and ensure that the NEW board delivers and gives you a return on your investment. However, given the history with this company....

Musicians Need To Read Too!- Beyond the Music Sheets

Musicians need to read too… and I don’t mean music sheets.

Anyone interested in advancing their career regardless of the field; knows that they must do A LOT of reading, research, analysis and put a strategic plan in place. The reading may focus on the technical aspects of the work, the best practices, innovation or reinforcing basic knowledge in the area.  For musicians it is no different!

So, the question becomes what should a musician read? A simple online search suggested the following (which I wouldn’t object to receiving as a gift- Birthday, Christmas, or because its 2016.):

  1. Start Your Music Business: How to Earn Royalties, Own Your Music, Sample Music, Protect Your Name and Structure Your Music Business- Audrey K. Chisholm. The title of this book reads almost like a to-do list for the local music industry. Most local artiste and their management/booking agents have very little knowledge in these critical areas. In recent times, the local courts have seen an increase in intellectual rights disputes over songs.  The classic tale goes:  “We was vibezing in the studio and we get ah hook and I ride the rhythm, studying money woulda hinder the vibez, scn”. Sigh. Audrey K. Chisholm is an entertainment lawyer who has worked with everyone across the music value chain, including the MTV Network and shows such as American Idol.

2.  Fans, Friends and Followers: Building an Audience and a Creative Career in the Digital Age- Scott Kirsner. If is one thing local artiste know is “friend ting”. ‘Friend ting” that results in scant attendance at your shows, plenty “likes” but low sales, or worse yet… the same people at all your shows i.e your audience is NOT growing. Too many local artiste STILL don't understand the FULL power of social media and how to use it to leverage other opportunities. Scott Kirsner offers a guide to growing your online fan base. It speaks to the marketing options and how to leverage your assets to achieve financial stability.

3.       How to Rap: The Art and Science of the Hip-Hop MC- Paul Edwards. Local Rap; where do I start? The thing about Hip-Hop is that it was intended to represent the communities from which the artiste originate. I am personally challenged when I hear certain local rap artiste with foreign accents, singing about or rather mimic the lifestyle of foreigners. I mean, I can’t say with any great surety that artiste X doesn’t actually own the Mercedes Benz that she is standing next to in the music video- despite the fact I have only seen her driving a Tida. This book is considered to be ground breaking research into hip-hop, as the author interviews over 100 artistes including Nelly, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy and Mobb Deep.

4.       Music Marketing for the DIY Musician: Creating and Executing a Plan of Attack on a Low Budget- Bobby Borg. Yes, marketing is PLANNED, it is NOT ADHOC development. A short-term Strategic Marketing Plan is usually three years in conventional businesses. In the music business the plan may be for three years but includes specific marketing activities or smaller plans by song or project. A FORMAL Marketing Plan helps the artiste to FOCUS their resources and activities on the right things- as it creates a direct link to the target market. For the marketing plan to be or remain in fit- the artiste must continuously get feedback from the intended audience. This helps the artiste stay relevant and increases the potential for wealth generation. Bobby Borg is an instructor at the Musician’s Institute at UCLA, he is also a drummer. He toured with bands such as Warrant, Beggars & Thieves and Left for Dead.

5.       Confessions of a Serial Songwriter- Shelly Peiken. Song writers probably have the greatest opportunity to generate the most amount of REVENUES from songs... a fact few are aware of . The writer of the song holds a heap of intellectual property rights that she can retain, sell or even leave to persons in a will. Writers have been traditionally undervalued in the local market and as a result sell their intellectual property rights for almost nothing. Shelly Peiken writes for artistes such as Merdith Brooks, Christina Aguilleras, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion and Selena Gomez. This memoir operates as a step by step guide through the song writing process.

There you have it! Five possible starts to building your knowledge base on building a career in the Music Business.... oh... don't forget the song sheets.

CreativeTT- Who is dem?

Often times when I mention CreativeTT in non-creative circles, I am faced with a face- of complete surprise. The Trinidad and Tobago Creative Industries Company Limited (CreativeTT) was established “to stimulate and facilitate the business development and export activities of the Creative Industries in Trinidad and Tobago to generate national wealth.”... AND most of the population has no idea it exists. Furthermore, CreativeTT which was established in 2013,  was not the genesis of government’s active decision to development the creative industries. In fact CreativeTT was created to take under its wings the existing FilmTT (est. 2006);  a version of the defunct Entertainment Company now MusicTT and an embryonic FashionTT. YES… all of that has been happening in our local creative space for several years.

So, how come the general population has no idea these entities exist? To me it is simple… they are not performing. Given Government’ propensity to boast about their achievements it seems quite clear that, in this instance, there is nothing to boast about….YET. I have been unable to locate any kind of documentation that sets out the key performance indicators for the company- I have no idea how they are assessing their success. What I do know is that the historical discontent by stakeholders, which often times operate like a ocean wave as it ebbs and flows especially after the National Budget Speech, has been vocal in the last few weeks. CreativeTT, which falls under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, budget has been decreased-  it recurrent expenditure AND its development programme (PSIP).

Brochure is available in the MTI website

But let us be real for a moment…. If you have a company that is not proving its worth with the little that you gave it- will you give it more the following year?? Business people know this, you throw the money at projects that give you a nice- decent- excellent return on investment. And yes, part of business is forecasting when to expect a profit, what type and when to expect returns. The truth is I do not know if anybody in CreativeTT or any of the subsidiaries have this type of skill set- a critical one in my opinion especially of your mandate involves “Wealth Generation.”

Sector development is a very challenging task- Industry Development is like moving mountains- inch by inch- over periods of years- in some cases lifetimes. It is not easy work especially if the right people with the right skills are not at the helm at the right time. Sadly, there still exist a belief in the creative sector that if you have some knowledge and good intentions, that that is enough to allow you the responsibility of developing a sector. This is far from true or sensible.

Sector development is straight up a business enterprise. It is straight up economics, finances, strategies… basically all those very nerdy things that creatives tend to not have the toleration for. Creative TT has a board that is mostly shrouded in secrecy (….. try a search online and see if any information pops up), has had a couple legal actions filed against it from past employees and barely has the staff capacity to operate a grocery…. much less develop an entire industry.

What is my point? The last three government's have been trying to diversity into the creative industries. The diversification effort has been very difficult for a number of reasons. Now that you know they exist DO NOT let up on them. State enterprises must be constantly reminded that they are funded by tax payer’s dollars and they must deliver on that investment. YOUR voice must be clear- it must be INFORMED- it must be focused on PROBLEM SOLVING. Most persons are working together towards the same objective---- to develop OUR creative industries. Let’s see if we can get two hands to clap.

Movie Review: Play The Devil

"Play the Devil" is a locally produced film, which premiered in the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival (TTFF) 2016, to sold out audiences and additional screenings. The movie was directed by Maria Govan and features British Actor, Petrice Jones and Trinidadian Actor, Gareth Jenkins.

Director: Maria Govan

“Play the Devil” is a multi-layered film that addresses topics such as sexuality, education, poverty and power dynamics. The film is interesting to me because it tackled head on the issues and emotions that a person, in this case a young man of 18, experiences as he gets a handle of his sexual identity. I have never seen sexual identity tackled so openly and honestly in a local film. It also examines the power dynamics between the haves and the have- nots, as well as the issues that arise when age is a significant factor in relationship.

On Screen Lovers and Lead Actors: Gareth Jenkins and Petrice Jones

"Play the Devil" was set against the backdrop of Paramin, a staunchly catholic community with strong ties to the Blue Devil Mas and Tradition. It is against this backdrop that we journey through the lives of a typical Trinidadian experience and explore the complex relationships that exist, mostly unspoken within the society.

Shot from the Movie: Blue Devil Band

The cast of characters are all relate-able to the average Trinbagonian. The grandmother who works as a domestic while taking care of her grandson, in the absence of his father and mother. The strong older brother, who defends his grandmother, hopes of his young brother’s success over himself and who has questionable treatment toward women. The rich business man who made all the “right decision” in life but is unhappy with his choices and the wife, who tries to overlook her husband’s desire for male lovers.

"Play the Devil" was one of the films chosen by FilmTT for development in 2014. I am uncertain the amount of the grant or how much input FilmTT had in the production, however the result in my opinion was quite good.  In fact the movie won two awards that the TTFF 2016- Best Trinidad and Tobago Feature Film and Best Youth Jury.

Now…. to rate the film in five areas that I think are relevant.
  1.   Representation of Trinidad= 8.5
  2.  Representation of issues related to sexual identity in the Caribbean= 8
  3. Writing, Editing and Story line = 8.5
  4. Audience engagement= 8
  5. Appeal for International Market= 8

Total Mean Score- 8.2 =  Find a Movie Screen

Key:
      1-3 = Wait for Cable
3-6 = Wait for the DVD
      7-9 = Find a Movie Screen
10 = Find the biggest badest screen ASAP!

Link to Play The Devil movie trailer:

Some additional thoughts:

  1. DISTRIBUTION- Distribution has always been an issue for local films, which is particularly troubling given that it is through distribution that films recoup some of its expenditure and/or get a return on the investment. I am very interested to see what becomes of this film, especially since FilmTT who is charged with developing the business and export capabilities of the local film industry, has been involved in bringing this film to movie screens.
  2. TALENT- The lead actor, who despite being good at his craft, is in fact a British actor who has studied for several year abroad. The support cast were all local actors, some have been in the theatre business for years and other were “fresh” faces. To be clear and fair, theatre acting and film acting are two different things which require different abilities. My question is… when we will see a leading actor or actress who is born and bred and training in Trinidad and Tobago. The question is important in the context of building an industry, as a talent pool must be developed of the quality to compete internationally. As I see it, a foreigner won over a local for the lead.
