CreativeTT seems to have made a conscious decision to do away with the usual shroud of secrecy, which has surrounded the company since it was formed in 2013. The usual modus operandi has been that the persons who comprised the Board, was generally unknown or known only to a few. CreativeTT favored using the General Managers of the subsidiaries- MusicTT, FilmTT and FashionTT, to be the face and voice of the company. However, a new day has dawned and we have a NEW BOARD!
Let us imagine for a second that a new board means that we will see new ways of doing things, fresh perspectives, pertinent and timely strategies, comprehensive approaches, gap analysis and tax payer dollars well invested.
The question then becomes what do we expect from a company charged "To stimulate and facilitate the business development and export capabilities of Creative Industries in Trinidad and Tobago."... and what do we expect from this NEW BOARD!
Here is my list in no particular order:
1. The adoption of skills sets to effectively make representation at International Trade Negotiations- These country level negotiations deal with a number of key issues related to trade such as Intellectual Property Rights, Taxation Treaties and Market Access.
2. A greater focus on developing Industry Infrastructure- The last board seemed focus on developing the talent pool (skills and business education etc), however INDUSTRY requires that issues such as Data Collection, Intellectual Property Frameworks and Market Development be developed in order to support; the now well skilled and educated talent pool. In simple terms, industry is the sea on which the skilled artiste sails.
3. Business Development Strategies developed from the business science- Business enterprises have several models that can be used to OBJECTIVELY determine what a business strategy should be... it basically spits out the answer for you. I would like to see the inputs that determines whether we should adopt a Market Penetration Strategy vs. a Market Expansion Strategy vs. a Hybrid. The inputs that clearly identify the Forces for Changes vs. the Forces Against Change AND the plan to leverage the forces for and mitigate the forces against. I would like to see some financial forecasting, so that I can see and know CLEARLY when CreativeTT can expect a profit from my tax payer dollars. AND if I can get that by subsidiary... that will be fantastic!
4. Well researched and brilliant strategic decision making in regards to Export Strategies- The decided strategy determines the areas in which CAPABILITY should be developed. Interestingly, I have never heard CreativeTT link capability with capacity... you know the marriage that determines Comparative Advantage and informs Competitive Advantage. I would love to see the board produce a Strategic Global Positioning Plan.
Imagine.... now WAKE UP!
Your responsibility as a stakeholder (your tax payers dollars) is to let YOUR voice be heard and ensure that the NEW board delivers and gives you a return on your investment. However, given the history with this company....
